“Stop the world, I want to get off.” A cry from the heart most of us recognise at some point.
Why does it happen?
There are times when even small doses of life can feel like too much. Sound, touch, activity or stress that would usually pass unnoticed starts to grate more than usual. At other times, it can feel like the opposite happens, taking more to feel anything at all. More pressure, more stimulation, something stronger to register a change.
They can feel like very different experiences, but they often come from the same place. Over time, the body adapts to sustained demand, and sensitivity shifts. The way we respond to what life throws up changes. It’s part of the body’s built-in defence system, adjusting how much we feel in order to keep things manageable.
The result is a sense that our responses don’t quite match what’s happening. Our normal changes, and we either start to avoid physical contact, or we need something bigger, stronger or more intense before it makes any impact. You’ll hear it described in different ways. “I need something quite strong before I feel anything.” “Light touch just doesn’t do much.” And at the other end, “Even small things feel like too much.” “I can’t settle, everything overwhelms me.” Different expressions, that come from same underlying pattern.
Yet, there are moments where things can shift and change. A steady, light touch. A consistent predictable rhythm. Nothing too intense, but techniques developed to help you reconnect with yourself. The tension drops, breathing slows, and attention settles. It’s simple, but it’s noticeable that connection that comes from the inside to the outside. Some of us recognise this through what’s often called ASMR. Or in full, Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. Others have experienced it without naming it. What’s missing is a clear understanding of why this works, and how to use it in a way that is consistent, a way of reconnecting with our own sensory system.
Pathway to Self-connection
ASMR in its numerous interpretations has become more widely recognised in recent years. For many of us, it points to something real. Certain sounds, movements or types of touch can create that shift we’ve just described. The body settles, attention narrows, things feel quieter and, in a way, more peaceful.
A lot of ASMR therapies are built around adding stimulation with more triggers, variation and input to hold attention. That can work in the moment. But adding more to an already saturated system with not change the pattern or underlying disconnection underneath.
If we’ve become less sensitive, we look for stronger input.
If we’ve become more sensitive, more input can feel overwhelming.
Either way, the focus stays on what’s being added, rather than what’s being experienced. What’s often missing is the self-connection. Not just noticing a sensation but recognising it as familiar. Staying with it long enough for it to settle and be appreciated. Allowing the body to respond and absorb the moment without needing more input to drive it.
This is a different approach with less input and more awareness. It gives a clearer link between what we feel and how we respond.
What is Pure ASMR?
Pure ASMR is a way of working with how the body responds to simple, consistent, rhythmic massage techniques.
The starting point is simple.
- Reduce sensory input.
- A steady approach.
- Make it deliberate and predictable.
There is no need to hold attention or add variation. It provides just enough for the body to recognise the sensory input. When input is consistent, the response begins to change and build.
What felt like “not enough” starts to register.
What felt like “too much” starts to settle.
The system doesn’t need to be driven; it is allowed to respond on its own. This is where the self-connection happens. It becomes low in intensity, and high in clarity. There is no need to add more, but to allow what’s already there to come through.
This is where reconnection starts.
A clear link is built between what we experience and how our bodies respond. From there, something more useful begins to build the way we connect and communicate with ourselves. A response that is consistently easier to access and we experience Pure ASMR. A therapeutic outcome that is less dependent on the body’s protective responses.
How Pure ASMR Fits into the Six Facets of Wellbeing
Pure ASMR isn’t separate from the six facets of wellbeing, it works through them. As the body reconnects and responses become clearer, the way we connect, move, learn and look after ourselves begins to change in a positive direction.
Connection
Connection starts with and is built on trust. By allowing another person into your personal space and becoming comfortable is a big step.
Pace is what makes that possible.
When the pace is steady and unhurried, the body has time to register and absorb what’s happening. There’s no need to brace, second guess or allow anticipation to build. The contact becomes easier to receive and predictable.
Over time, that builds familiarity and a feeling “I’m alright”. The contact feels clearer, and being with another person in that space becomes comfortable and natural.
Activity
Activity is about how the body responds and benefits with movement. Pure ASMR supports that by changing the quality of the response. With steady, rhythmic input, the body has time to follow rather than resist. The gentle mobilisation allow joints and soft tissue to begin to move more freely, with less restriction.
There’s no push for range or intensity. The focus stays on flow, how movement travels, how it settles, and how it carries through the interconnection of the body. As that response becomes clearer, movement feels easier. Less effort is needed to achieve the same result, and transitions between movement and stillness become smoother and more responsive.
Learning
Learning comes from opening up and developing new lines of communication in the body through self-awareness. With simple, consistent, rhythmic input, we start to pick up the neuromuscular response more clearly. In other words, we can feel when the body is holding, when it’s allowing, and how that develops to more freedom. That makes it easier to “tune in” in a way that is recognisable and repeatable.
Because the input of touch and movement is simple, it becomes sustainable. It doesn’t rely on intensity, perfect conditions or external influences. It can be used regularly, and it holds its effect over time. As those signals become more familiar, we begin to understand how the body responds, and how small changes in pace or input can shift that response.
Appreciation
Appreciation is a slow burner, and it can be difficult at first for it to become our nature. Pure ASMR can act as the appreciation gateway. As we settle into deep relaxation, the inner channels open to allow us to be in the moment when there’s a growing awareness of what’s going on inside. A clearer sense of connection, communication, and how our body is responding.
Through this response we can appreciate how the various systems of the body work together to bring about a deep sense of wellbeing.
Giving Back
Giving back isn’t normally the first thing that comes to mind when we receive a Pure ASMR treatment. It’s true that we can receive a treatment or even a course of treatments and experience the benefits to our health and wellbeing without telling anyone.
But we all know someone who is struggling with sensory overload and its symptoms or needing greater stimulation or becoming hypersensitive to stimulation. So passing on our knowledge could be a life changer for someone else.
Nutrition
Nutrition is influenced by how the body is responding, not just what we eat.
After a Pure ASMR treatment, your system settles and the impact is noticeable. Lowering of stress, promotes a more stable internal state. Which in turn improves your parasympathetic autonomic nervous system that has a direct effect on gut health.
This means that the improved sleep helps the body it its “house keeping mode”. In turn, we become less tempted to comfort eat and our digestion becomes calmer and more productive.
Who is Pure ASMR for?
The benefit of Pure ASMR is simple, it induces calm, reduces stress, and aids sleep.
It works through steady, rhythmic touch that your body can follow. For some of us, that means things begin to register again. We don’t need as much stimulation to feel a achieve to feel change. For others, it means things become less overwhelming and the system is less reactive. In both cases, the response becomes more recognisable, clearer and more consistent.
The benefits carry through into daily life. It becomes easier to move emotionally between activity and rest, to recognise when we need to slow down, and to access that shift without relying on specific conditions.
The Pure ASMR approach suits anyone:
- who finds it difficult to switch off
- who feels out of context with their own responses
- who feels restless with life
It also suits those of us who want something practical that help them reconnect with their body. Not a technique to perform, but a way of working with the body that can be used consistently over time.
Closing Thought
Pure ASMR is about working with how the body responds and creating the conditions for it to settle and become clearer. From there, it becomes something we can use and return to develop greater self-awareness.
Pure ASMR Services
Pure ASMR is offered in three formats, depending on what is right for you.
1. Signature Pure ASMR (90 minutes)
A full body treatment that works across the body.
This is a “toe to head” treatment that will take you through the rhythm of Pure ASMR using advanced massage techniques that feell light but have a deep impact. This approach is appropriate for clients:
- Who find traditional massage too deep or overwhelming
- Who find they need to wind back from the drive for big stronger experiences
The outcome of this treatment is a step towards anxiety reduction, inner peacefulness and improved sleep.
2. Head, Neck and Shoulders and Arms (60 minutes)
A focused upper body treatment designed to help you where time is limited.
This treatment works best once the body has experienced the full process. For a first session, we usually start with the full Pure ASMR course of treatments, so there’s enough time for the response to settle and become familiar and clear.
The work stays in areas where the response is easy to access. The pace is steady, the rhythm consistent, allowing the body to shift without needing much input.
3. Pure ASMR Introductory Course (5 treatments)
A structured series of treatments that will help you build to a full Pure ASMR experience.
Each session builds on the last, allowing the body to become more familiar with the response and making it easier to access over time.
This suits those who want to learn how to engage with their inner communication by:
- Learning that contact doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Through adapting to receiving massage therapy, your body can start experiencing its benefits of stress reduction.
- Recalibrating input that doesn’t need to be stronger, bigger or more intense. Our nervous system is highly responsive light and subtle touch, and texture.
